Rug Cleaning in Sullivan’s Island

Collection and delivery in Sullivan’s Island are included. We take the rug back to the workshop, wash it properly, and bring it home.

The Houses

What Sullivan’s Island is built from

The island on the north side of the harbour mouth, over the Ben Sawyer bridge, with Fort Moultrie at the west end. Pre-war beach houses, a handful of converted coast-artillery batteries, and a great deal of rebuilding after Hugo came ashore here in September 1989. The beach has been accreting for decades, so front-row houses now stand well back behind a wide belt of maritime scrub.

Almost entirely year-round and often multi-generational. There are no hotels on the island and very little rental stock, so houses tend to stay in families — and rugs tend to stay in the same room, in the same position, for decades.

What We Find Here

The Sullivan’s Island problem

The distinctive problem here is time in one position, and it is not a soiling problem at all. A wool rug that has spent thirty years in the same spot has aged unevenly across its own surface: the part in the open has quietly given up a little colour and taken on a soft, slightly matted face, and the part that has lived under the sofa has not. Those are now two different textiles, and because the change happened at a few percent a year nobody in the house ever saw it. Cleaning does not create that difference — it removes the even layer of soiling that had been disguising it, which is why an honest intake conversation on this island is as much about what a rug will look like afterwards as about what will come out. The related find is the old repair. These houses are full of rugs that were mended forty or fifty years ago with whatever wool was to hand, and those patches have aged at a third rate again, so they step forward as soon as the field around them brightens. Both are worth knowing about before the rug leaves the house, not after it comes back.

If that sounds like your rug, send the form and describe what you are seeing. We will tell you whether it needs the full treatment or not.
