What James Island is built from
Across the Ashley from downtown, on the road out to Folly Beach. The James Island problem
This county carries one of the worst Formosan subterranean termite infestations in the country, and it changes two things about owning a rug that nobody expects. The first is direct. Formosan termites eat cellulose, and the foundation of a rug is cellulose: cotton warps and wefts, jute in some constructions, the scrim in a tufted rug. A rug lying flat against a skirting in a house with activity behind it is not off the menu, and the damage starts on the underside where there is nothing to see until the rug is turned over. The second is procedural, and it does more damage more often. When a house is treated or tented, everything comes up off the floor at short notice and gets rolled and stacked for a few days by people whose job is the building rather than its contents — so rugs get rolled dirty, rolled damp, folded instead of rolled, or stood on end on a garage slab. If a treatment is coming, the rugs want to leave the house clean and come back afterwards, rather than spend the week piled in a corner of it.
