What Daniel Island is built from
An island between the Cooper and the Wando, inside the Charleston city limits but in Berkeley County, reached by the Mark Clark. Almost all of it has been built since the late 1990s as a planned town — houses, townhouses and apartments on a proper street grid, with a tennis stadium, a business district, and sections still under construction.
A young, professional, overwhelmingly year-round population furnishing new houses with new rugs, bought online and from design showrooms rather than inherited from anybody.
The Daniel Island problem
These are the newest rugs on the route and that is a specific liability, because a very large share of what has been sold as a luxury rug since the mid-2010s is viscose. It goes out as art silk, bamboo silk, banana silk or simply as silk-look, and it is none of those — it is regenerated cellulose, which loses most of its strength when it is wet, yellows from plain water, and mats flat and permanently underfoot. A dog bowl, a dropped glass, a steam mop run a little too close to the edge, or a well-meant scrub with a wet cloth leaves a stiff yellow ring that is a change in the fibre rather than a deposit on it. There is nothing there to remove, which is why it does not come out, and almost nobody is told any of this at the point of sale. The second thing is more prosaic: an island that is still building means construction fines on every pair of shoes on the street — cement dust, sawdust, screed sand — and those are angular and hard in a way ordinary household dust is not.
